DevOps – what is it?

DevOps is a combination of the words “development” and “operations”, and it represents a modern approach to software development that emphasizes collaboration, automation, and continuous improvement. Instead of keeping software developers and IT operations teams separate, DevOps brings them together to work as one unified team throughout the entire software lifecycle—from planning and coding to testing, deployment, and maintenance.

The main goal of DevOps is to deliver software faster, more reliably, and with higher quality. Traditional development often faced problems like long delays between updates or miscommunication between teams. DevOps solves this by introducing continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD) practices, which automate code testing and deployment. This allows developers to release updates frequently, detect bugs early, and respond quickly to user needs.

Key DevOps tools include Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, Git, and Ansible, which help automate tasks, manage code, and deploy applications efficiently. These tools reduce human error and make systems more scalable and consistent across environments.

DevOps is also about culture, not just technology. It encourages transparency, shared responsibility, and constant feedback. Teams monitor system performance in real time, analyze data, and use it to continuously improve products.

In short, DevOps is a philosophy and a set of practices that bridge the gap between software development and IT operations.
